VOCABULARY WORD STUDY

Pick a book that you want your CHILD to read, or that they want to read to begin this assignment.
They will need the following materials to complete this assignment:

Notebook/ notebook paper
Dictionary
3 ring binder (if using loose notebook paper)
Book

For younger children around elementary age:

1. While reading find 5-10 words that you do not know in your reading and write them down.
2. Using the words before and after this word write what you think the word means
3. Using the dictionary define the word.
4. Were your predictions correct?

For older middle school age children:

1. While reading find 10-20 words that you do not know in your reading and write them down.
2. Using the words before and after this word write what you think the word means.
3. Using the dictionary define the word.
4. Were your predictions correct?

For high school aged children:

1. While reading find 25-50 words depending on the size of the book that you don’t know.
2. Predict what you think the word means, using the context clues provided
3. Define the word.
4. Were your predictions correct?


Store these pages in a binder for further use in your reading. Continue adding new words with every book you read.
