31.

So long September

We finished a full month of homeschooling! So far, this 2016-2017 homeschool year has been a good one. The kids are starting to do anything humanly possible to NOT start their school day. Or, once started, anything to avoid finishing it. It's been a challenge some days, but overall, we're covering a lot of ground.

The kids need to work on sticking with chores. Those have been falling back into my lap. I'm guessing, they realized, they will get done whether by them or me. I found these cute little chore pics on Pinterest. I printed out a few sets and laminated them. I'll be making a chore section for Chris with pay the bills as a permanent chore :)

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by bringing home a furry friend from your local shelter.

Our first family dog Kelsie was a shelter dog. She was returned to the ASPCA 3 times before finding her forever home with us.

She was the greatest dog ever. She loved every kid like she was their mother, very protective. When I first met Chris, she was very protective of him. She would jump on any and everyone, very wild and energetic. Even into her old age, she would still bark at any and everyone who walked by our house.

She lived to be 15 years old. Our hearts are broken and our house is a lot emptier now that she's gone.

Halloween Magazine Art

http://www.jennyknappenberger.com/10-halloween-art-lessons-for-kids/

We made magazine strip art this afternoon. I think it was relaxing for them. They were unplugged from Roblox and Minecraft for about 2 hours! I did print out the halloween figures and I found another set of smaller halloween coloring pages over at http://www.mamasmiles.com/printables/

I did notice, searching back for that last link, she has the haunted house peek in the window project. We did that the last two Halloweens, so we tried this with the magazines instead. The month hasn't even begun yet and we still might make it.

National Coffee Day

I'm a newbie when it comes to all things coffee. I started drinking coffee 3 years ago. That's right, we've been homeschooling for three years and that's when I started drinking coffee. At my former job people would rave about the fancy coffee machine. I used it for tea or hot chocolate. I was missing out all those years!

Several business have been advertising a free small coffee for today. It's a rainy day here and I'm not heading out for just a small cup of coffee.

Fall stovetop simmer potpourri

I just found some bruised apples in the refrigerator. I was inspired to make a stove simmer. It's a cold rainy day here in Baltimore and I'd love nothing more than to lesson plan all day. I know that's not going to happen, but I can hope!

I started to boil about three cups of water
Once it was bubbling, I added the following
I peeled the apple and cut it into big chunks
I peeled the oranges and cut those into thirds
I found a stick of cinnamon and peeled it apart a few times
I added in cloves to make me feel like I was making a witches brew
I turned the fire down and let it simmer

World’s first baby born with new “3 parent” technique

A Jordanian couple has been trying to start a family for almost 20 years. Ten years after they married, she became pregnant, but it ended in the first of four miscarriages.

In 2005, the couple gave birth to a baby girl. It was then that they discovered the probable cause of their fertility problems: a genetic mutation in the mother’s mitochondria. Their daughter was born with Leigh syndrome, which affects the brain, muscles and nerves of developing infants. Sadly, she died aged six. The couple’s second child had the same disorder, and lived for 8 months.

Using a controversial “three-parent baby” technique, the boy was born on 6 April 2016. He is showing no signs of disease.

Mexican Jumping Beans

WHAT'S INSIDE???
This amazing little, live bean, the size of your fingernail, has been entertaining and fascinating both young and old alike for more than 50 years, proof enough that they are harmless, yet entertaining natural wonders. It is a member of the TORTRICADAE family. This family is somewhat of a curiosity. A moth, of the Genus and Species Larva, TINEOIDEA/ LASPEYRESIA SALTITANS lays its egg in the flower tree called EUPHORBIACEAE SEBASTIANA PAVONIANA, found only in Mexico. The flower then forms a seedpod around the moth egg. This seedpod serves as a temporary home for "JUMPING BEANDITO".

When the early May rains start, the seedpod matures, splits into three parts and falls to the ground. The egg turns into a caterpillar which then consumes the seed inside. The jumping movements are the caterpillar's movements to get to the edible seed. Eventually, the caterpillar will spin a silk cocoon which causes more jumping. It will then go dormant for a short time. It is not dead. Instead, it is going through metamorphosis. It will turn into a tiny, harmless moth that does not pose any danger to either clothes, plants or humans. You can actually watch the small moth emerge. If you should be so lucky as to see a moth hatch, do not worry. It will not harm a thing and it hates the taste of clothes. The moth does not require food. Point it South and let it go, PLEASE!!!! A happy bean prefers to rest in a cool, dark place when it is not jumping. They also love to travel, so take them along in your shirt pocket. The warmth of your heart will make them bounce. Occasionally, they do like a little drink. So be kind and give them a light mist once a week. They are ideal pets since they don't need to be walked, fed or brushed. PS, They jump best to music!

Hey kids, play our online puzzles and test your skills.
Four different puzzles, one of each Beandito. Time yourselves and challenge your friends.

THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE APPROVES OF THE IMPORTATION OF JUMPING BEANS INTO THE UNITED STATES, STATING THAT THEY POSE NO DANGER WHAT SO EVER TO OUR PLANT LIFE, MATERIAL GOODS (CLOTHES) OR HUMANS, AND THAT THEY ARE NON-TOXIC.
POISON CONTROL CENTERS LIST THE BEANS AS HARMLESS, STATING THAT THE ONLY DANGER IMPOSED BY THE BEAN IN CASES OF SWALLOWING ONE, ARE FROM THE GERMS THAT MIGHT BE FOUND ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE POD, AS WITH ANY ITEM WHICH IS SWALLOWED.

Henry brought these mexican jumping beans home today from AWANA. I used to have jumping beans from Ocean City, MD when I was a little younger than he is. I kept mine in my jean drawer and put it on the window sill. Never had a moth.
I just heard them pop and noticed the http://jbean.com/ website on the case.

Henry's beans look like these. We thought they got smashed in his bag.

The MJB website has games.. Henry's case says, Chiquita Beandita.
They have little stories http://jbean.com/pages/story.html
I'm totally showing his these games. This was an awesome prize! I think, the girls will like a jumping bean, too.
Chiquita Beandita, the renegade. Never afraid to make a mistake, is the renegade. Not one to dress like an ordinary bean, she likes to put on a show. Her Jumping Beandito footwork is pretty amazing. It is said that she studied Flamenco. Her main job as a Beandito is to teach others how to be strong, persevere and never, never be afraid of failure.

Vlogoween Cootie Catchers

I guess the children love making youtube videos. We're preparing 30 crafts for Vlogoween. Today I found these cute cootie catchers. http://www.easypeasyandfun.com/halloween-cootie-catchers/ The pumpkin and vampire designs are free and for $3.99 you can purchase the other patterns. I don't have a color printer, so I opted for the free choices; the kids can color them and they'll never know otherwise.

What Are the Six Tastes in Ayurveda?

Ayurvedic medicine -- also known as Ayurveda -- is one of the world's oldest holistic (whole-body) healing systems. It was developed thousands of years ago in India. It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit.

What Are the Six Tastes in Ayurveda?

To find out exactly how much of each taste you should eat, you'd have to visit an Ayurveda practitioner for a personal assessment, but here are some typical foods categorized by taste to give you an idea of what's often incorporated into a meal or diet, according to Shah:

Sweet: sweet corn, sweet peas, sweet potatoes

Sour: lemons, limes, yogurt, tomatoes, kimchi

Salty: seaweed (the only naturally salty food, Shah says, but anything you sprinkle salt on counts as salty)

Pungent: black pepper, jalapeños, paprika, ginger, hot sauce

Bitter: kale, arugula, spinach, dandelion leaves, grapefruit

Astringent: pomegranate seeds, broccoli, cauliflower, turnip

Dyslexia and visual thinkers

My child has a totally different way of seeing the world! He thinks in 3D Pictures.
Stop for a moment and look up from your computer. All around you are things that were designed by someone. Even the webpage in front of you was designed. Your computer was designed. The room you are sitting in, the clothing you are wearing? Everything was designed, and chances are they were designed by a person with the gift of being able to think visually.

Some people are able to imagine something in their minds that has not yet been created. They are able to envision a better way of doing things. They are able to envision an object and change the size, shape and color using the power of the 3D workstation called the imagination. The people who designed the objects all around you were often called bad students, day-dreamers and doodlers. They are the visual thinkers.

What if your child is a visual thinker? Only 10% of the population have the power to think visually, rather than to think with words. The people with the most powerful of visual minds often have an imbalance when it comes to standardized learning situations. The visual mind swirls with colors, ideas, music, art, and creativity and drives the visual thinker into a state of constant creativity and movement. Standardized systems of learning try to conform the child and make efforts to normalize him through medication, punishment, and control so he will not be a disrupting in the classroom.

The visual thinker learns differently, and if you ask me, I would tell you that they can not be taught, they must discover. They struggle with the lifelessness of flat pages, the discomfort of the desk, the buzz of the florescent lights, dullness of flat words on a page, and concepts void of emotion, dimension and wonder. They will ponder the mysteries of measurement and time, but their minds go blank when sitting at a desk staring at repetitive lists of math facts. They create works of art and new inventions from items rescued from the trash can, but can't hold a pencil correctly when asked to write down their spelling words. They can tell the most amazing stories and their words will take you to far off lands and fill the air with magic and mystery, but if asked to put a sentence on paper, they might just cry. They are brilliant, they are amazing, they are curious and brave... until they are forced to conform to a way of learning designed for children who have no dancing, no questions, no music and no colors in their minds.

The majority of students will be content to follow the instructions, fill in the blanks, and make their lists on paper, but the visual thinker was not created for desks, for charts, for lists, for textbooks, for flash cards, for teachers, or for chalkboards... they would dance on the desk, challenge the teacher, they would add color to the chart, they would roll up the chart to make a telescope or a musical instrument, they would stack the text books and build houses for invisible people, they would turn the flashcards in to a magic trick and turn the chalkboard into a work of art that belongs in a museum. They are constantly in search of the third dimension, the music and the movement.

The visual thinkers of the world were created to be the designers, inventors, the artists, the musicians, the sailors and explorers. We say they have a problem with obedience and respect or we call it Dyslexia, Asperger's Syndrome or ADHD. We try to tame them. Honestly, we have failed them.If a child is failing in his classroom, it is the classroom that failed the child, the child is not the one with a problem just because he learns differently.

The child must be set free to be the inventor, the artist, the dancer. So who will teach the inventor? Who will train the artist? The child must become his own teacher, and his parents and teachers must become his students, to learn from him, to understand him, to realize that he has within him the power to become great. We need to learn, to discover how to help him become who he was meant to be. We must accept that it may never happen in a desk, in a classroom and behind a pile of textbooks, even if you give the child medication and take away his crayons. Do you want to be the one to take away Albert's compass, Benjamin's kite, or Leonardo's paintbrush or little Thomas Edison's mirrors?

What is the solution for the child who fails in the classroom? Set him free from the classroom. Ask the child what he wants to learn about. Ask the child what he wants to do. Take the child to the book store, take the child to the art store, take the child to the beach, the forest, the ruins of a castle. Give him pets and let him catch lizards. Read to him until he learns to read to himself. Search for learning materials that captivate the visual mind, things like compasses, clay, mirrors and paintbrushes. Let him sail, play instruments, and dig in the dirt. Let him take things apart and give him colored pencils. Let him watch people at work doing all different things in the world, take him to the kitchen, take him to an art studio, take him into factories and show him how to use sewing machines, instruments, scroll-saws, and tools. Let her dance.

Someday you will look around the world and see things that were designed by someone great - your child. You will hear music that composed by someone great - your child. You will read books written by someone great - your child. You will try new recipes invented by someone great - your child. You will use computer programs designed by someone great - your child. Your child, the one who wouldn't sit still, who couldn't memorize math facts, who choked on spelling words, who danced on her desk, who failed in the classroom, who later designed a miracle and learned to tame lions... because she had a parent who set her free to be herself. Because he had a father who gave him tools instead of flashcards. Because she was set free to become who she was designed to be. He was given the love, acceptance, support and trust. She was free to dance, sing and draw.

This article was written by Sarah J. Brown, a visual thinker with Asperger's Syndrome. She failed 3rd grade because she spent too much time doodling and daydreaming. When she was 13 her parents chose to homeschool, because the school system was failing her. Sarah is the inventor of Dyslexia Games, a learning program for children with dyslexia, ADHD and Autism who need a learning program that uses art to teach reading, writing and spelling.

Five wild lionesses grow a mane and start acting like males

By Karl Gruber
This lion king (pictured above) is a queen. And she’s not the only one.

Five lionesses in Botswana have grown a mane and are showing male-like behaviours. One is even roaring and mounting other females.

Male lions are distinguished by their mane, which they use to attract females, and they roar to protect their territory or call upon members of their pride. Females lack a mane and are not as vocal.

But sometimes lionesses grow a mane and even behave a bit like males. However, until now, reports of such maned lionesses have been extremely rare and largely anecdotal. We knew they existed, but little about how they behave.

Now, Geoffrey D. Gilfillan at the University of Sussex in Falmer, UK, and colleagues have reported five lionesses sporting a mane at the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana’s Okavango delta.

Gilfillan started studying these lionesses back in March 2014, and for the next two years he focused on recording the behaviour of one of them, called SaF05. She had an underdeveloped mane and was larger than most females.

“While SaF05 is mostly female in her behaviour – staying with the pride, mating males – she also has some male behaviours, such as increased scent-marking and roaring, as well as mounting other females,” says Gilfillan.

“Although females do roar and scent-mark like males, they usually do so less frequently,” he says. “SaF05, however, was much more male-like in her behaviour, regularly scent-marking and roaring.”

Lioness with shaggy hairs aound neck

A likely explanation is an increased level of testosterone as these lionesses mature, says Luke Hunter, president and chief conservation officer at the global wild cat conservation organisation Panthera.

In lions, testosterone directly affects the development of manes. Castrated males, for example, lose their ability to produce testosterone and promptly lose their mane, too.

In 2011, a captive lioness called Emma at the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa developed a mane. Tests revealed high levels of testosterone due to a problem in her ovaries, and once they were removed she reverted to a typical lioness.

The idea that testosterone is implicated in the Botswana lionesses is also backed by observations of their reproductive success, says Kathleen Alexander at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

“While some of the maned lionesses were observed mating, none of them became pregnant, suggesting they are infertile, a known consequence of high levels of androgens such as testosterone in females,” she says. “The behavioural changes suggest this is likely the case.”

Hunter suspects this explanation applies to the animals studied by Gilfillan and his colleagues. “Given all five known maned females come from the Okavango region, there must be a genetic component in this population underlying the phenomenon,” he says.

“I don’t think this is anything to be concerned about,” says Hunter. “Although the females are apparently infertile, they otherwise appear to live long, healthy lives. And from a conservation perspective, there is nothing to suggest the pattern is increasing or will ever be anything more than a rare, local phenomenon.”

No one seems to be studying the exact genetic and hormonal causes of this phenomenon at the moment. “I guess there are just one or a few genes altered,” says Vincent Savolainen at Imperial College London, who had a student briefly work on the possible causes. “I believe some masculinised genes have been documented in domesticated cats – it would be good to look into this, especially given that the cat genome is available as reference.”

Could the masculinised females in fact be a boon to the pride when it comes to competing with other prides? It’s possible, it seems.

Gilfillan says he once saw SaF05 bring down a zebra. “A neighbouring pride stole the zebra from SaF05, but in return SaF05 killed two of their cubs.”

Cub-killing behaviour is rare in females but common in males.

Inspiring Miscarriage Tattoo

I think this is beautiful. I really hope sharing this article and tattoo idea helps others out there suffering through a loss.

From Woman's Day

After Joan Bremer posted a photo of her newest tattoo to Imgur, it quickly went viral-and we can see why. While most tattoos have hidden meanings, Joan's tells the story of something that isn't usually talked about: About seven weeks into her pregnancy, she began to experience bleeding and cramping. Joan soon realized she was having a miscarriage.

"All of my tattoos represent a time or event in my life," Joan told WomansDay.com. "Even though this was a personal tragedy for us, I still wanted to be able to mark it in some way."

Joan says she had already told her friends and family that she was expecting a baby, so it made sense that she allowed them to share in the burden of her loss. The one single line represents an umbilical cord while the two hearts are mother and baby.

"My husband and I do like to think it represents the baby that we will always carry in our hearts even, while moving forward in our life as a couple and hopeful family," said Joan.

Her tattoo, by Joey at California Electric Tattoo, is inspiring women across the internet to chime in with their own stories of loss.

"Miscarriages are super, super common. It's time to end the stigma surrounding them and talk more about it when we talk about reproduction," commented kellyography, an Imgur user.

According to the Mayo Clinc, about 10 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. However, many miscarriages occur before a woman even knows she's pregnant.

"So many people have reached out and said that they have had miscarriages, but never talked about it," said Joan. "Being able to talk about it, share with other women, and hear other people's experiences has been extremely healing for me."

Joan and her husband plan to keep trying to conceive after her body heals. She one day hopes to give birth to a rainbow baby.

Katie Prager passes away five days after husband

I love a great love story; and I'm glad these two were able to fall in love and feel love these last few years.

Katie passed away, just five days after Dalton.

They were born with the genetic disorder that attacks the lungs and also affects the digestive system and multiple other organs. They met through a mutual friend, and were married five years ago.

Both received lung transplants but developed complications including lymphoma.

GoPro captures shark encounter with a kayak

Drew Trousdell became visibly concerned after the first violent tug on his paddle as he kayaked outside the surf recently in Florida’s Matanzas Inlet.

What could it have been but a shark?

Troudsdell picked up his pace, determined to reach the shore as quickly as possible.

But the shark kept pace, biting Trousdell’s paddle again and again. At one point the predator appears to have gone after the back of the kayak.

Trousdell, who captured the footage with a GoPro mounted on the bow of his vessel, made it to shore and later discovered that he was fortunate not to have been capsized during the tense encounter.

The shark is difficult to detect at full speed in the YouTube video, but stop-motion screen shots beginning at 1:07 reveal the shark’s head and body partially out of the water as it lunges after the paddle. Bite marks on the paddle are visible at the end of the video.

Matanzas Inlet, south of St. Augustine in St. Johns County, is a narrow channel connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the south end of the Matanzas River.

George Burgess, a renowned shark expert from Florida Museum of Natural history, told GrindTV that the shark was most likely a blacktip shark.

“It’s a fish-eating shark that no doubt interpreted the splashing of the paddle tips as movements of normal prey species,” Burgess said. “At this time of year the mullet ‘run’ is underway with thousands upon thousands of these estuarine/lagoonal species departing the shallows through inlets to mass up along the beaches prior to moving offshore to spawn.

“Sharks, tarpons, jacks, barracudas, porpoises and other larger predators take turns on this rich resource.  Surfers – and yes, kayakers – take a risk when sharing these waters during the annual mullet run. We had four bites this past Sunday in Volusia and Brevard counties, all on surfers.

Floating farm could grow food on empty cargo ships

Design student Philippe Hohlfeld, from London's Royal College of Art (RCA), has devised a way to stop this empty space going to waste. Grow Frame is a collapsible hydroponic farm that could grow vegetables inside the empty containers during the weeks-long sea voyage.

"Grow Frame tackles the challenge that half of all containers going to China are empty. And that means, right now, 13 million containers annually are traveling around with just air. And when I heard about that I thought 'no, that's not a problem, that's an opportunity'," Hohlfeld told Reuters.

"Every container is 12 square meters of land, and they're basically free. And free real estate in the world is really hard to come by, and especially in the countries where they end up in China and Japan and south-east Asia, that land would be really expensive and is at a premium."

Each plant is grown in small individual plastic bags containing all the water and nutrients needed to feed the plant during the trip.

The mini farms would cultivate vegetables using battery-powered LED lights that can be adjusted to provide precisely the right spectrum of light for optimal growth. Hohlfeld said the energy efficient lights and the battery would hold enough power for the duration of the voyage; for example, for the approximately three weeks it takes for the vessel to travel from the UK to China.

To keep the climate inside each container as natural as possible, Hohlfeld said he's planning to grow mushrooms alongside leafy vegetables to help balance the mini ecosystem.

"I'm growing cabbages, spinach, lettuces and bean sprouts. All these plants create oxygen, as we know, and it's really good in nature because it balances with animals. But in the container it could be a problem; so I'm introducing mushrooms which turn the oxygen back into CO2 because they respire the same way that we do. And that way the whole system keeps itself in check," he said.

A key design consideration of Grow Frame was for it to collapse to a fraction of the size so as not to take up valuable space when the container was transporting goods.

"I thought about an autonomous process that works in an enclosed environment over three weeks and that brings a real benefit to China and that can be as collapsible as possible; so it can be as small as possible," Holhfeld said, adding that he now hopes to turn his proof-of-concept design into a working prototype that could be tested on the open seas.

Holhfeld is now looking for funding to help turn the concept into a reality. He estimates it would cost around £9,000 ($12,080 USD) to develop and manufacture the first frames, and a further £6,000 ($8,050 USD) to pay for a shipping trial. But the potential profitability of the reusable system would quickly recoup the initial costs, he said.

A 17-year-old has committed doctor-assisted suicide

A 17-year-old has committed doctor-assisted suicide in Belgium, the first minor to do so under rules adopted in 2014 allowing euthanasia for people of all ages, the head of the national committee for euthanasia said on Saturday.

Belgium legalized euthanasia for people with "constant and unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be alleviated" in 2002. It expanded its euthanasia law to cover all children under the age of 18 in 2014. In order to be euthanized, children must be able to understand what it means and get consent from their parent or guardian and "death must be expected in the near future."

Belgium is the only country in the world that allows euthanasia without age restriction. Euthanasia laws vary by country. Laws in Belgium, the Netherlands, Colombia and Luxemburg allow mercy deaths for adults, which usually means a doctor administering lethal doses of barbiturates. The Netherlands allows it for children older than 12. Switzerland, Germany, Japan and Canada, doctor-assisted suicide, where people take the final action themselves, is legal.

In the ten years to 2013, the number of euthanasia cases in Belgium rose from about 1,000 to 8,752, according to official records. To undergo euthanasia, the minor must also be in a "terminal medical situation with constant and unbearable physical pain which cannot be assuaged and that will cause death in the short term", the law says.
