Pumpkin Spice .. you mean, Squash Spice

I'm not too big on the whole Pumpkin Spice craze. And now, I find out that my canned pumpkin isn't from Sugar pumpkins, its from Squash?!?!
 *GASPS*
  Say, what????

Libby's actually uses its own variety of the Dickenson squash, called Libbys select. It's a squash. Still a fruit, but a squash. Have you ever carved a pumpkin as a kid and tasted the meat? It's gross! Have you ever had butternut squash, it's delicious!

The FDA finds that drawing a hard-line designation between pumpkins and "golden-fleshed" winter squash is murky, it's perfectly legal for Libby's and other canned pumpkin brands to label their products as such. In addition, companies are allowed to combine different plant varieties into one purée to achieve a desired flavor and consistency, especially, beneficial if one type doesn't grow as well from year to year.

As you can see in the video, that's a squash. Libby's claims to provide up to 80% of the canned pumpkin consumed throughout the year. I found a can down in my pantry. I posted the photo above, it clearly states ingredients: pumpkin.

According to the University of Illinois, 90% of all the pumpkins grown in the United States are raised within a 90 mile radius of  Peoria, Illinois. Libby’s processing plant and cannery is in the middle of pumpkin country. Libby's contracts independent farmers to grow pumpkins on about eight square miles of land nearby the plant,  providing them with the proprietary seeds.

I have had other brands of canned pumpkin and it can be wetter in consistency, which makes for a runny pie. Libby's is like a tried and true brand. When purchasing it, you know that it's going to be a great product.
