Reviewing Addition Facts and Fact Learning Strategies

Fact Learning - Addition


Mastery of the addition facts is the expectation in Grade 2. This knowledge
is then applied to 10s, 100s, and 1000s in Grade 3. If 3 + 4 = 7, then 30 +
40 = 70, 300 + 400 = 700, and 3000 + 4000 = 7,000.
Note: The sums of 10s are a little more difficult than the sums of 100s and 1000s because
when the answer is more than ten 10s, students have to translate the
number. For example, for 70 + 80, 7 tens and 8 tens are 15 tens, or one
hundred fifty. At the beginning of grade 4, it is important to ensure that
students review the addition facts to 18 and the fact learning strategies.

The following are the addition fact strategies with examples, and examples
of the same facts applied to 10s, 100, and 1000s:

5000 + 1000
c) Plus Two Facts: (2-more-than facts) 7 + 2, 70 + 20, 700 + 200,

d) Plus Three Facts: 6 + 3, 60 + 30, 600 + 300, 6000 + 3000
e) Near Doubles: (1-apart facts) 3 + 4, 30 + 40, 300 + 400,
3000 + 4000
f) Plus Zero Facts: (no-change) 8 + 0, 80 + 0, 800 + 0, 8000 + 0
g) Doubles Plus 2 Facts: (double in-between or 2-apart facts) 5 + 3,

Teaching Mental Computation Strategies
The development of mental math skills in the classroom should go beyond
drill and practice by providing exercises that are meaningful in a
mathematical sense.

While learning addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, for
instance, students learn about the properties of these operations to
facilitate mastery. They apply the commutative property of addition and
multiplication, for example, when they discover that 3 + 7 is the same as 7
+ 3 or that 3 x 7 = 7 x 3. Knowing this greatly reduces the number of facts
that need to be memorized. They use the distributive property when they
learn that 12 x 7 is the same as (10 + 2) x 7 = (7 x 10) + (2 x 7) which is
equal to 70 + 14 = 84.

Understanding our base-ten systems of numeration is
key to developing computational fluency. At all grades, beginning with
single-digit addition, the special place of the number 10 and its multiples are
stressed. In addition, students are encouraged to add to make 10 first and
then add beyond the ten. The addition of ten and multiples of ten is
emphasized, as well as multiplication by 10 and its multiples.

Connections between numbers and the relationship between the number of facts
should be used to facilitate learning. The more connections that are
established, and the greater the understanding, the easier it is to master
facts. In multiplication, for instance, students learn that they can get to 6 x 7
if they know 5 x 7 because 6 x 7 is one more group of 7.


In general, a strategy should be introduced in isolation from other
strategies. A variety of practice should then be provided until it is
mastered, and then it should be combined with other previously learned
strategies. Knowing the name of a strategy is not as important as knowing
how it works.

 Are there any students in the class who already have a
strategy for doing the computation in their heads? If so, encourage them to
explain the strategy to the class with your help. If not, you could share the
strategy yourself.

Explaining the strategy should include anything that will help students see
its pattern, logic, and simplicity. That might be concrete materials,
diagrams, charts, or other visuals. The teacher should also “think aloud” to
model the mental processes used to apply the strategy and discuss
situations where it is most appropriate and efficient as well as those in
which it would not be appropriate at all.

In the initial activities involving a strategy, you should expect to
have students do the computation the way you modeled it. Later, however,
you may find that some students employ their own variation of the strategy.
If it is logical and efficient for them, so much the better. Your goal is to help
students broaden their repertoire of thinking strategies and become more
flexible thinkers; it is not to prescribe what they must use.

You may find that there are some students who have already mastered the
simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts with
single-digit numbers. Once a student has mastered these facts, there is no
need to learn new strategies for them. In other words, it is not necessary to
re-teach a skill that has been learned in a different way.

On the other hand, most students can benefit from the more difficult
problems even if they know how to use the written algorithm to solve them.
The emphasis here is on mental computation and on understanding the
place-value logic involved in the algorithms. In other cases, as in
multiplication by 5 (multiply by 10 and divide by 2), the skills involved are
useful for numbers of all sizes.


In general, it is the frequency rather than the length of practice that fosters
retention. Thus daily, brief practices of 5-10 minutes are most likely to lead
to success. Once a strategy has been taught, it is important to reinforce it.
The reinforcement or practice exercises should be varied in type, and focus
as much on the discussion of how students obtained their answers as on
the answers themselves.

The selection of appropriate exercises for the reinforcement of each
strategy is critical. The numbers should be ones for which the strategy
being practiced most aptly applies and, in addition to lists of number
expressions, the practice items should often include applications in
contexts such as money, measurements and data displays. Exercises
should be presented with both visual and oral prompts and the oral
prompts that you give should expose students to a variety of linguistic
descriptions for the operations. For example, 5 + 4 could be described as:
• the sum of 5 and 4
• 4 added to 5
• 5 add 4
• 5 plus 4
• 4 more than 5
• 5 and 4 etc.


Many of the thinking strategies supported by research and outlined in the
curriculum advocate for a variety of learning modalities.
For example:
• Visual (images for the addition doubles; hands on a clock for the
“times-five” facts)
• Auditory (silly sayings and rhymes: “6 times 6 means dirty tricks;
6 x 6 is 36")
• Patterns in Number (the product of an even number multiplied by 5 ends
in 0 and the tens digit is half of the number being multiplied)
• Tactile (ten frames, base ten blocks)
• Helping Facts (8 x 9 = 72, so 7 x 9 is one less group of 9; 72 - 9 = 63)

Whatever differentiation you make it should be to facilitate the student’s
development in mental computation and this differentiation should be
documented and examined periodically to be sure it is still necessary.

How can I tell if my child has dyscalculia?

How can I tell if my child has dyscalculia?
If your child has persistent difficulties with mathematics, you should suspect dyscalculia, even if your child also has reading problems. You should have your child referred to a school psychologist for an assessment. Assessment should include interviews with you and your child, an IQ test, and mathematics tests.

Do not forget though that you have the right to be informed of results, and that you know your child best. Always ask for a second opinion if in doubt. You should be aware that dyscalculia is less well known than dyslexia, so this makes it hard to diagnose. You may need to be persistent!

What can be done to help?
This depends a lot on where you live and how much government funding there is for the treatment of learning disabilities. For example in the U.S., a considerable amount of resources for learning disabilities are provided through schools. In this case, you should work with your school to get your child’s learning disability recognized and get an individual education plan.

In some other countries, very little is provided through the school, and you will have to seek outside help. Sometimes governments pay for this help, other times you will have to pay for it yourself. Usually, outside help is from a private clinic or foundation which specializes in the assessment and treatment of learning disabilities. In some European countries learning disabilities are "medicalized", and there are assessment centers and therapists in hospitals attached to psychiatry units.

Wherever you seek help, you want to eventually find a trained specialist who is able to assess the learning disability, make up a remediation program, and work with your child on a one to one or a small group basis.

What kind of remediation works best?
There are many different approaches to remediation, some proprietary "methods" taught to special educators, others published in commercially available books or software.

Which works best remains an open question. We just don't know enough about dyscalculia to be sure. Nor can we be sure that given remediation will work perfectly, or even well. Learning disability specialists who work with children often spend a lot of time trying different techniques and exercises to figure out what is helping the most for a particular child. This is the hallmark of a good person, rather than having a set approach, they will analyze and problem solve.

The types of remediation which are likely to help the most are those which focus on understanding (particularly of quantity), rather than purely drilling or mechanistic approaches.

My child has had so much help but still isn't making progress!
This is unfortunately very common. Learning disabilities take a long time and a lot of effort to overcome and are very frustrating for children and parents. The important thing is for neither parents nor children to give up. They CAN be overcome, and it is worth it. DO keep evaluating whether you think the current approach is a good one, and don't hesitate to try a different person or ask for a second opinion.

Should I buy a remediation product from company X?
Ultimately this is your decision, but be aware that this area has its fair share of charlatanism. Some things to be wary of are:

1. Promises of miracles or instant cures.

2. Very high prices. They are designed to fool you into thinking that the product must be really valuable if it costs a fortune.

3. "Special" methods that appear have little to do with maths. It is a fundamental psychological principle that the less specific the training is the less it works.

4. Claims that the product is "research-based" or "proven in research". This is good if it is true, but unfortunately, it isn't always. Find out for yourself... if you can't find detailed information about the research such a list of the scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, be suspicious!

5. A large investment required without a chance to cancel or pull out.

What should I tell my child's teacher?
A common result of dyscalculia is a high level of maths anxiety. Dyscalculic children may soon come to hate maths and try and avoid it. Even if they are getting extra help outside of the classroom, activities in the classroom may be far too fast for them and very discouraging experience. Talking with your child’s teacher can help make them aware of the learning disability and in finding ways of making maths lessons more productive and less stressful for your child. Even little things can help - like writing down the “mental math” problems so your child can work at his/her own pace rather than missing most of them because they were still working out the first one and didn't hear the rest.

It can be difficult talking about this to your child's teacher. Some teachers may be more receptive than others. If your child has outside help from a specialist, it may help to have them talk to the teacher. There is not very much awareness of dyscalculia in most countries (an exception being the US where most teachers are aware of math learning disability), and many teachers may not have had any training in how to teach learning disabled children. Will my child "grow out of" dyscalculia?
While it is possible that children may grow out of some difficulties with mathematics, in most cases your child will NOT grow out of dyscalculia. It is important therefore to seek help, your child needs special assistance in order to catch up on maths.

Can dyscalculia be prevented?
At the moment, no (apart from avoiding risk factors like drinking alcohol during pregnancy). In the future, one hope is to develop methods to detect dyscalculia prior to school, so that children would get extra help and monitoring before starting school and during the first years of learning maths. This is really our best chance of being able to cure or prevent dyscalculia.

We are starting a new homeschooling year. Welcome to 2019-2020!!! This year I've made up several lesson plans that will require the children to use the internet for research. I want them to be more hands-on and tech-savvy this year.


Family Contract for Online Safety
Kids' Pledge
1. I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number,
parents’ work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school
without my parents’ permission.
2. I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me
feel uncomfortable.
3. I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first
checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it
is in a public place and bring my mother or father along.
4. I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with
my parents.
5. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel
uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my
parents right away so that they can contact the service provider.
6. I will talk to my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will
decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be
online, and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or
break these rules without their permission.
7. I will not give out my Internet password to anyone (even my best friends) other
than my parents.
8. I will check with my parents before downloading or installing software or doing
anything that could possibly hurt our computer or jeopardize my family’s privacy.
9. I will be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is
against the law.
10. I will help my parents understand how to have fun and learn things online and
teach them things about the Internet, computers and other technology.
I agree to the above terms I will help my child follow this
agreement and will allow reasonable
use of the Internet as long as these

The theme is what the story is about. A theme sometimes conveys a moral. If you have read the Aesop’s Fables you should know what I mean. All of those stories have a message. Some stories are written just for the purpose of conveying a message. The message could be any of the following: The victory of virtue over vice. Sportsman spirit: It is not about winning; it is about how you play the game. The righteous may have to face huge hardships. Honesty is the best policy. You don’t really have to state the message at the end of the story. As the story develops and ends the reader should be able to comprehend the message. Every story requires a plot. Actually, the story develops from the plot. You can indicate the plot in the opening lines and then develop it gradually. As the plot unfolds characters will appear on the scene and start interacting with one another. Complications and conflicts, These are an integral part of the plot. Complications and conflicts don’t have to be really complicated. Minor complications will do just fine – it depends upon the plot. Think about events that lead to the conflict. What are the problems that the characters encounter? You can develop complications and conflicts out of the interactions of the characters. Sometimes, destiny can play a role in making your characters’ life complicated.

Vegetarian Sushi Rolls

INGREDIENTS:

FOR THE SUSHI
2 fat cucumbers
1/4 avocado, thinly sliced
1/2 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1/2 yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced
2 small carrots, thinly sliced

FOR THE DIPPING SAUCE
1/3 c. mayonnaise
1 tbsp. sriracha
1 tsp. soy sauce

DIRECTIONS
Using a small spoon, remove seeds from the center of cucumbers until they are completely hollow.
Press avocado into the center of cucumber, using a butter knife to press inside the cucumber. Next, slide in bell peppers and carrots until the cucumber is completely full of veggies.
Make the dipping sauce: combine mayo, sriracha, and soy sauce in a small bowl. Whisk to combine.

Slice cucumber rounds into 1” thick pieces and serve with sauce on the side.

The Cay by Theodore Taylor

Two shipwreck victims, Phillip, a blind, white
American boy, and Timothy, an old black
sailor, are stranded on a small island in the
Caribbean. Being totally dependent on
Timothy, Phillip must overcome his
prejudice and learn to accept differences in
people in this adventure story of survival
and adjustment.


The Cay provides a wonderful example of
characterization in writing. Through
character perseverance, a young boy learns
to overcome prejudice and better
understand the meaning of love. The author
reveals the virtues of respect and
perseverance. The novel also examines the
literary themes of man vs. man and man vs.
nature.

The Cay is a coming-of-age story about Phillip Enright, a eleven year old boy who lives on a small
Dutch island during the beginning of World War II. Initially excited by war, Phillip is upset that his
mother insists on leaving his father and the island to go back to America. While in route to Panama, Phillip and his mother’s ship is torpedoed. Philip awakes on a raft with an old black man named
Timothy, a cat, and a bump on his head. As they drift on the sea, Phillip’s injury causes him to lose
his sight. Eventually they land on a deserted island and Phillip has to learn to live as a blind person.
Timothy insists on teaching him to do things for himself because they both know that Timothy is
old enough that he could die on the island. Phillip comes to accept Timothy as a friend and no longer
judges by the color of his skin.
With an initial quote from Martin Luther King, Jr., it is clear that Taylor is addressing racism when
he wrote this book in the 1960s. The story is engaging while teaching children about not being prejudiced. It is best read with an adult who can explain the themes of war and racism. One fascinating
aspect of this novel is that the narrative is not sacrificed despite its original intent for a young audience, and can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. Taylor’s messages on racism are as relevant today as
they were in the 60s. His discussion of different cultures speaks of the value of acceptance and appreciation for different lifestyles. Taylor also explores the varying perspectives on voodoo, comparing a
white boy’s judgements on mysticism to a practitioner’s belief in a karma-like religion. Religious persecution is prevalent today and Taylor actively tries to dispel stereotypes in his writing. His crusade
against prejudice in this novel is a great theme for any reader

ABOUT THE BOOK
Reaching once again into her rich childhood experience, Patricia Polacco tells the memorable story
of how her grandma—her Babushla—helped her overcome her fear of thunder when she was a
little girl. Ms. Polacco’s vivid memories of her grandmother’s endearing answer to a child’s fear,
accompanied by her bright folk-art illustrations, turn a frightening thunderstorm into an adventure
and ultimately…a celebration!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Patricia Polacco was born in Lansing, Michigan in 1944. Her stories are inspired by her Russian,
Ukrainian, and Irish heritage. As a child, Polacco struggled to learn to read and learn that she was
dyslexic at the age of 14. In her stories, she shares with readers her cultural background as well as
her struggles and achievements in school. She found relief by expressing herself through art and is
an inspiration for all, especially those with learning struggles. She is world famous, not only
because of her 115 books, but because of humanitarian causes. She wrote her first children’s book
at age 41.

Thunder Cake

On sultry summer days at my grandma’s farm in Michigan, the air gets damp and heavy.
Stormclouds drift low over the fields. Birds fly close to the ground. The clouds glow for an instant
with a sharp, cracking light, and then a roaring, low, tumbling sound of thunder makes the
windows shudder in their panes. The sound used to scare me when I was little. I loved to go to
Grandma’s house (Babushka, as I used to call my grandma, had come from Russia years before),
but I feared Michigan’s summer storms. I feared the sound of thunder more than anything. I always
hid under the bed when the storm moved near the farmhouse.
This is the story of how my grandma—my Babushka—helped me overcome my fear of
thunderstorms.
Grandma looked at the horizon, drew a deep breath and said, “This is Thunder Cake baking
weather, all right. Looks like a storm coming to me.”
“Child, you come out from under that bed. It’s only thunder you’re hearing,” my grandma said.
The air was hot, heavy, and damp. A loud clap of thunder shook the house, rattled the windows
and made me grab her close.
“Steady, child,” she cooed. “Unless you let go of me, we won’t be able to make Thunder Cake
today!”
“Thunder Cake?” I stammered as I hugged her even closer.
“Don’t pay attention to that old thunder, except to see how close the storm is getting. When you
see lightning, start counting…real slow. When you hear the thunder, stop counting. That number is
how many miles away the storm is, so we have time to make the cake and get it into the oven before
the storm comes, or it won’t be real Thunder Cake.”
Her eyes surveyed the black cloud a way off in the distance. Then she strode into the kitchen.
Her worn hands pulled a thick book from the shelf above the woodstove.
“Let’s find that recipe, child,” she crowed as she lovingly fingered the grease-stained pages to a
creased spot.
“Here it is…Thunder Cake!”
She carefully penned the ingredients on a piece of notepaper. “Now let’s gather all the things
we’ll need!” she exclaimed as she scurried toward the back door.
We were by the barn door when a huge bolt of lightning flashed. I started counting, like
Grandma told me to, “1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10.”
Then the thunder ROARED!
“Ten miles…it’s ten miles away,” Grandma said as she looked at the sky. “About an hour away,
I’d say. You’ll have to hurry, child. Gather them eggs careful-like,” she said.
Eggs from mean old Nellie Peck Hen. I was scared. I knew she would try to peck at me.
“I’m here, she won’t hurt you. Just get them eggs,” Grandma said softly.
The lightning flashed again. “1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9” I counted.
“Nine miles,” Grandma reminded me.
Milk was next. Milk from old Kick Cow. As Grandma milked her, Kick Cow turned and looked
mean, right at me. I was scared. She looked so big.
ZIP went the lightning. “1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8” I counted.
BAROOOOOOOOM went the thunder.
“Eight miles, child,” Grandma croaked. “Now we have to get chocolate and sugar and flour
from the dry shed.”
I was scared as we walked down the path from the farmhouse through Tangleweed Woods to
the dry shed. Suddenly the lightning slit the sky!
“1-2-3-4-5-6-7” I counted.
BOOOOOOOOOM BA-BOOOOOOM, crashed the thunder. It scared me a lot, but I kept
walking with Grandma.
Another jagged edge of lightning flashed as I crept into the dry shed. “1-2-3-4-5-6” I counted.
CRACKLE, CRACKLE BOOOOOOM, KA-BOOOOOM, the thunder bellowed. It was dark
and I was scared.
“I’m here, child,” Grandma said softly from the doorway. “Hurry now, we haven’t got much
time. We’ve got everything but the secret ingredient.”
“Three overripe tomatoes and some strawberries,” Grandma whispered as she squinted at the
list.
I climbed up high on the trellis. The ground looked a long way down. I was scared.
“I’m here, child,” she said. Her voice was steady and soft. “You won’t fall.”
I reached three luscious tomatoes while she picked strawberries. Lightning again!
“1-2-3-4-5” I counted.
KA-BANG BOOOOOOOOOAROOOOOM, the thunder growled.
We hurried back to the house and the warm kitchen, as we measured the ingredients. I poured
them into the mixing bowl while Grandma mixed. I churned butter for the frosting and melted
chocolate. Finally, we poured the batter into the cake pans and put them into the oven together.
Lightning lit the kitchen! I only counted to three and the thunder RRRRRUMBLED and
CRASHED.
“Three miles away,” Grandma said, “and the cake is in the oven. We made it! We’ll have real
Thunder Cake!”
As we waited for the cake, Grandma looked out the window for a long time. “Why, you aren’t
afraid of thunder. You’re too brave!” she said as she looked right at me.
“I’m not brave, Grandma,” I said. “I was under the bed! Remember?”
“But you got out from under it,” she answered, “and you got eggs from mean olf Nellie Peck
hen, you got milk from old Kick Cow, you went through the Tangled Woods to the dry shed, you
climbed the trellis on the barnyard. From where I sit, only a very brave person could have done all
them things!”
I thought and thought as the storm rumbled closer. She was right. I was brave!
“Brave people can’t be afraid of a sound, child,” she said as we spread out the tablecloth and set
the table. When we were done, we hurried into the kitchen to take the cake out of the oven. After the
cake had cooled, we frosted it.
Just then the lightning flashed, and this time it lit the whole sky.
Even before the last flash had faded, the thunder ROLLED, BOOOMED, CRASHED, and
BBBBAAAAARRRRRROOOOOMMMMMMMMED just above us. The storm was here!
“Perfect,” Grandma cooed, “just perfect.” She beamed as she added the last strawberry to the
glistening chocolate frosting on top of the Thunder Cake.
As rain poured down on our roof, Grandma cut a wedge for each of us. She poured us steaming
cups of tea from the samovar.
When the thunder ROARED above us so hard it shook the windows and rattled the dishes in
the cupboards, we just smiled and ate our Thunder Cake.
From that time on, I never feared the voice of thunder again.

MATH CURSE

SUMMARY
On the day after Mrs. Fibonacci says to the class, “You can think of
almost everything as a math problem,” one girl wakes up to find that
a MATH CURSE has been put on her. As she realizes that everything
actually IS a math problem, her head starts spinning with questions
such as: How many feet in a yard? How many yards in a neighborhood? How many fingers are in our class? How many M&Ms
would you eat if you had to measure the Mississippi River with
M&Ms? At times puzzling, and always hilarious, students will enjoy
trying to solve this girl’s myriad of problems, while delighting in her
zany train of thought. At the end, the girl proves that with enough
critical thinking, anyone can reason their way out of even the
toughest math curse.
OBJECTIVES
• Students will solve everyday math problems.
• Students will create their own math problems.
• Students will search for math in their everyday lives.
BEFORE VIEWING ACTIVITIES
Brainstorm with students how math is used in everyday life.
Guiding questions:
• In what types of situations do you have to use math or counting
in your life?
• Why is it important to understand different kinds of math?
• For what kinds of jobs do you need to be a good mathematician?
• Have you used math today? When?
Post students’ answers. Tell students that they will be watching a
movie about a girl who finds math all around her. Encourage them
to watch and listen for ways that they can make connections with
the math in the girl’s life and the math in their own life.
Play math games with the students. Some suggestions are:
• Uno
• I’m thinking of a number… (use the number line)
• Find hidden numbers in pictures
• Monopoly
• Dominoes
• Dice games
• Sudoku
AFTER VIEWING ACTIVITIES
Incorporate some of the problems in the movie into a “Problem of
the Day” for math class. Revise the problems to meet your students’
knowledge and skill level, as well as to reflect the dynamics of your
classroom. For example, change 24 students to the number of
students in your class. As an extension, after students have solved
the problems, have them write their own multiple choice answers,
including one silly or clever answer as the girl did in the movie.
Go on a school Number Hunt with younger students. Create a list
of things within the school for children to count. Suggestions are:
teachers, students, water fountains, doors, fire alarms, book shelves,
desks, chairs, windows… Construct a poster with the students
entitled, “How Many In Our School?” Write the numbers for each
thing counted and have students illustrate the poster. Display the
poster in the hallway.
Tell students that you have put the MATH CURSE on them!
Challenge students to go through a whole day thinking of math
problems that apply to their everyday lives. Encourage them to use
examples from the movie, such as: How long does it take you to get
ready in the morning? How many outfits do you have to choose
from? How far is it between your house and school? How long does
it take you to travel that distance? How many students are in your
class(es)? How many different body parts do those students have?
Other suggestions for problems are: How many times do you write
your name in a day? What is the ratio of free time to work time at
school? What is the ratio of how many times you raise your hand to
how many times you get called on? Tell students to write down 5-10
questions from their day to share with the class. Then, use their
collection of problems for homework and class work assignments.

Unschooling: Inspirational Learning Method or Educational Neglect?

The number of homeschooled students is small but growing
In 2012, the U.S. Department of Education reported that about 3.4 percent of all age-eligible students in this country are homeschooled, showing an upward trend from 1999 and 2007 reports.

As the population of homeschooled students grows, both educators and regulators are viewing the movement in an attempt to measure the overall efficacy of this educational choice. They are particularly drawn to examining one unconventional method: unschooling.

The philosophy of unschooling
This method of homeschooling eschews a formal curriculum. Instead, it focuses on creating a rich learning environment with parents acting as facilitators rather than teachers, sparking and nurturing children’s interests. The basic philosophy is that natural curiosity will inspire learning, which then reinforces the idea that learning is a lifelong habit of the mind rather than something that occurs within formal school buildings and is limited to targeted outcomes.

While the Department of Education does not keep specific numbers on the unschooled population, those within the movement believe that unschoolers account for about 10 percent of those who are homeschooled.

Supporters of the movement say that when left to their own devices in a fruitful environment, children not only understand educational content but also tend to engage the world creatively, learn self-direction and become highly motivated learners.

Unschooling results survey: high satisfaction and creative, entrepreneurial careers
Surveys of unschooled children show high degrees of satisfaction with their education with few serious complaints. When chosen with intention, unschooling appears to have educational outcomes similar to public schools.

Students who are unschooled appear to be drawn to careers that are entrepreneurial or arts-related. A high number also choose STEM careers, affirming the belief that traits fostered in unschooled students enhance creativity and self-direction in future careers.

Critics worry that unschooled students do not get enough diversity, time-management skills
Unschooling is not without its critics. Supporters of public education worry that unschooling has not been adequately studied. Diana Goldstein, a critic of the unschooling movement, points out that research supports the concept of self-directed learning, but shows that it is done most effectively under the supervision of pedagogical and content experts — in other words, teachers.

Goldstein is also concerned about the potential lack of cultural and socioeconomic diversity unschooling provides. Other critics worry that the lack of framework in unschooling may make it difficult for students to adjust to schedules and deadlines once they enter college.

Does rejecting a formal curriculum lead to knowledge gaps?
Because a basic tenant of unschooling is to reject a formalized curriculum, critics and regulators worry about educational neglect. Without a clear framework of what students are learning, it’s difficult for those outside an unschooling family to ensure that objective educational standards are being met, particularly in the areas of math and science.

Rather than facilitating their educational journey, a very small portion of students report their unschooling experience was the consequence of parents who gave up on a more formal curriculum. The children fended for themselves in an environment that was not appropriately charged with learning opportunities.

The Coalition for Responsible Home Education warns that the quality of homeschooling depends largely upon the parent in charge. Parents must not mistake unschooling’s rejection of formal curriculum for an overall devaluing of education. While it is essential not to judge a movement based on a small subset of its population, some regulatory oversight is essential to ensure that unschooled students are not neglected.

Bringing unschooling techniques to the classroom
Finally, with public school educators seeking to increase engagement in STEM as well as student self-regulation, it may be time to begin to embrace some of the radical techniques of unschooling in the classroom. Mainstreaming free-time opportunities like 20 percent time projects in public school is not a rejection of formalized learning expectations or environments. Instead, it  can give public school students valuable opportunities for unfettered curiosity that promotes creativity and self-regulation, two of the benefits of unschooling.

Maryland Home Instruction
​Maryland law, Education Article, §7-301, Annotated Code of Maryland, Compulsory Attendance, and COMAR 13A.10.10.01 states that each child who resides in Maryland and is 5 years old or older and under 18 shall attend a public school regularly during the entire school year unless the child is otherwise receiving regular, thorough schooling during the school year in the studies usually taught in the public school to children of the same age.  Maryland recognizes nonpublic schools and home schooling as options to public school enrollment for students to receive regular, thorough instruction.
