Reduce Our Use

Art Project: - Have the students look in their lunches to see if they have anything that may negatively impact the environment. Make a class collage out of the clean wrappers in their lunches, and ask the students if they think the collage could be even smaller the next day. - Students may prepare two collages, one labeled harmless, biodegradable materials and the other with harmful non biodegradable materials, each demonstrating the appropriate materials from student’s lunch. Display the two collages in a place easily visible to the rest of the school. Together as a class, students can write an explanation of why using the biodegradable materials is better for the environment. This activity may best be suited for 2nd grade and up.

I found this Art project online @ http://rprogress.org/education/k-12pdf/foodandyou.pdf

In closing, ask the students how they think they can make their Footprint smaller with what they
do and eat. Students could suggest eating a few meals a week that cause less waste.

This activity can be adapted for homeschoolers. I feel like, even though, my kids eat three homemade/cooked meals a day, I also buy small chip bags, we premake pb&j's and freeze them- they have a sandwich bag, paper plates, napkins, paper towels are all things we can reduce by using reusables.

We watch documentaries of people flying all over the world and lecturing us on our footprint, seems kind of hypocritical to the children. Making it aware that we do accumulate unnecessary waste we can become a more conscious bunch.

Electronics Are Energy Vampire

Lesson Description:
Students will battle energy vampires by creating reminders to unplug appliances for their schools and homes. they can design original reminder cards and hang them around the room near energy vampires.

Eco-fact: The average home has 20 electrical appliances that are “energy vampires”. that's because the appliances continue to suck electricity even when they're off. Energy vampires cost $3 billion a year -- or about $200 per household. To help stop energy vampires, plug appliances into surge protectors that can easily be turned off to cut the flow of energy.

Time Needed:
30 minutes

Materials Needed:
3 x 5 (or 5 x 7) index cards
coloring utensils

"UNPLUG ME" ACTIVITY
Lesson Description:
Students will battle energy vampires by creating reminders to unplug appliances for their schools and homes. they can design original reminder cards and hang them around the room near energy vampires.

Eco-fact: The average home has 20 electrical appliances that are “energy vampires”. that's because the appliances continue to suck electricity even when they're off. Energy vampires cost $3 billion a year -- or about $200 per household. To help stop energy vampires, plug appliances into surge protectors that can easily be turned off to cut the flow of energy.

Procedure:

  1. Make a list of appliances in the room that are energy vampires such as computers, overhead projectors, tv’s, etc.
  2. Hand out the index cards and coloring materials.
  3. Students can then write messages and reminders on the cards to turn off and unplug appliances when they aren’t in use. some examples are:
  4. “Unplug Me”
  5. “Turn Me Off”
  6. After writing the messages on the cards, students can draw designs or logos to decorate the cards.
  7. Once completed, hang them around the room near energy vampires.

Adaptations:
For younger children teacher could duplicate cards and slogans and students could add illustrations.
