Virtual Field Trip - How Aluminum is made

Visit the "It All Starts With Dirt" Web site

See how aluminum is made

Alcoa's founders discovered how to make pure aluminum and created a new industry the world over. Explore the amazing process of turning a four-ton truckload of dirt into a ton of aluminum.

Map: Alcoa Around The World

It All Starts with Dirt. This kind of dirt is called bauxite ore. From four tons of bauxite, it's possible to refine about two tons of alumina—a powdery white oxide of aluminum. And from those two tons of alumina, we can smelt a ton of aluminum. Smelting aluminum was the invention that launched Alcoa in 1888. A ton of aluminum is enough to make the cans for over 60,000 Cokes, Pepsis, or Buds. Enough to make the spaceframes for seven full-size cars. Enough to make 40,000 computer memory disks, capable of storing all the books ever published. All from a truckload of dirt. It's almost magical. And we're proud to have the magicians who can pull it off.

There's no other material quite like aluminum
- it is light in weight
- highly resistant to corrosion
- strong in alloys
- an excellent conductor of electricity and heat
- an excellent reflector of heat and light
- nonmagnetic
- nontoxic
- outstanding in cryogenic properties
- highly workable
- easy to assemble
- and naturally good looking.

My kids are obsessed with YouTube Challenges. I created my own Try Not to Laugh challenge for them. Check it out below.

Most of the TNTL challenges I hear them laughing at are super inappropriate. I made my own playlist and sat the oldest two down to watch it.
The feedback I received was, "Who is Chuck Norris?" Grandpa Tony was probably laughing in Heaven and saying, "Walker Texas Ranger"

Homeschooling Through Summer 2016

Summer is calling our name. Two more official homeschool days until we reach our 180th school day for the 2015-2016 school year. We usually spend our summers relaxing, playing at the local beaches, visiting friends & family, attending bible schools, and not thinking about Homeschooling!!!!

This summer is going to be different for the Ader Kids. I'm sure there will be a bible school or two that the kids will be attending, or volunteering at, but I want to start a weekly unit study. I've brainstormed a few topics and found a few resources on Pinterest.

1)  Its no secret we have a Presidential Election this fall, so our first study will be on Presidents.

US Presidents Study for Homeschoolers {Including plans for a 10 week unit study and FREE downloadable notebooking page!}

2)  This is a 19 lesson writing unit. I would love for my children to write more. This seems like it would be a great match for us.

3)  I have to include a Minecraft Unit. Summer wouldn't be the same without Minecraft.

4)  I found this Worm Unit! We had no success with the meal worms .. we didn't have proper ventilation and the container grew mold.

Mothers Day 2016 Our fun Adventures at Leakin Park and Carrie Murray Nature Center

Gwynns Falls Leakin Park Mothers Day Adventure 2016

Miniature train rides every second Sunday of the month from April through November
*rides are free but please consider making a donation
http://calslivesteam.org/

This is a Mothers Day tradition for our family, now that we've been going on Mothers Day for the past four years. Usually, we follow the trail and stop by the mansion and run in the fields. this year we decided to hit the trails, A and B trails. Which is how we discovered the Carrie Murray Nature Center. Lots of wonderful art sculptures to look at -along the trails and on the grounds of the nature center and plenty of creatures to see.

Here are some of the Textbooks we used this school year (2015-2016) Grades 2, 4, 6

According to Google

rou·tine
ro͞oˈtēn/
noun
plural noun: routines
1.
a sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program.
"I settled down into a routine of work and sleep"
synonyms: procedure, practice, pattern, drill, regimen

We do not have a routine at our house or during our homeschool day. Things pop up, kids get sick, or hungry (.. or both) and we have to come up with a different plan on the spot. I start each homeschool year with a lesson plan book that I've filled up with the first two months full of wonderful lessons, activities, outings, and other projects. I purchased three on clearance for $1.75 at Lakeshore back in 2014 and I thought it would help me for three years. Well, I'm still using the first book.

Now that its the end of the year, I thought, I'd share what we have been using for the upper grades in our homeschool. I had a totally different plan starting out, so a lot of what we are doing now is what worked and is working for us. I'm almost sad to see summer arriving because the kids now know whats expected of them and they are doing excellent with their schoolwork.

SECOND GRADE
Open Court reading for Grade 2
We Live Together for Social Studies Grade 2
-I only have the teachers manual so we work from this
Math is Scott Foresman Grade 2 and this book is great because you can tear out the pages and    schoolwork can be completed anywhere in the house (or outside the house)
   Harcourt Science Grade 2

SIXTH GRADE
Social Studies is The World past and present for 6th Grade
  enVision Math Grade 6
  Harcourt science Grade 6
The Language of Literature Grade 6

THIRD GRADE
  Math Connects Grade 4
  Harcourt Science Grade 4
Social Studies The Maryland Adventure Grade 4
 Open Court Reading Grade 4

rou·tine
ro͞oˈtēn/
noun
plural noun: routines
  1. 1.
a sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program.
"I settled down into a routine of work and sleep"

We don't have one and I don't want one! Having to be on time to Dr. Appointments, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Awana, and Rooted is enough for me.

Here's a peak into the Kindergrten core subjects textbooks we use daily in our homeschool.

For Kindergarten we use these textbooks

I'm only showing one unit manual for reading but, I picked up 7 units of the open court series. I just look ahead for lesson ideas and stories

We also supplement with workbooks and Youtube videos. Check out my playlist for morning routines and circle time songs  Maaaami's Youtube Page

The Shrinker (with coffee) recipe inspired from Trim Healthy Mama Facebook page

I finally bit the bullet and ordered mct oil, collagen, nutritional yeast, and glucomannan from Amazon last night.
I found whey protein at Big Lots for $14.00 yesterday. They also had almond flour, still $12.00 like at the supermarket, but it's got to be had and I grabbed it along with golden flax seed.
Today is day two of sipping on the shrinker.

A quart jar
Two trays of ice cubes
Almond milk
Oolong tea
Cayenne pepper
Sea salt
Cinnamon
Stevia
Pure Vanilla extract
I added a little black coffee today

Homeschooling made possible by The Baltimore Book Thing

WOW 2011!!!!

Its been a long while!!

Please, check out the kids over at their youtube page  www.youtube.com/user/lorrainepinkard

As of March 2014, we are now a homeschooling family. Its a struggle most days, but I've been told it will get better one day.

We were lucky to have stumbled upon The Baltimore Book Thing www.bookthink.org
-The Book Thing is a wonderful building, so wonderful you can look past the fact there is no air condition during the hot summer weekends. I say weekends because the hours are Saturday and Sunday 9-5.. even if its Christmas or New Years.  Every book in the building is free. You can donate as many books as you'd like and you can take home as many books as you can carry - or make a few trips to the car as I did on my first visit. I went at the end of the public school year and found text books and teacher manuals donated to The Book Thing from area schools.

baltimore book thing blog.maaaami.com

Tragically, there was a fire at The Book Thing this past winter.  http://fw.to/iJ0Desk

They are rebuilding and moving forward. Check out their webpage for fundraising events and online donations.
