12-Year Old Wins 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee - (June 1, 2017)
Ananya Vinay of Fresno, California won the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday, taking home a $40,000 cash prize after 12 hours of picking her way along a precarious lifeline of consonants and vowels.
She correctly spelled the word marocain, a dress fabric made of warp of silk or rayon and a filling of other yarns, to win the 25-word championship round of the spelling bee held in suburban Washington.

This year marks nine decades of the national spelling bee.
Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the nation's oldest and most iconic competitions. They progress from classroom to cafeteria, from auditorium to civic center, delighting friends, family, sponsors and fans, just as millions of other students have done before them.
Promoting Literacy Since 1925
The National Spelling Bee first started in 1925 when nine newspapers joined together to host a spelling bee. Little did they know that 90 years later their literacy effort would reach 11 million students every year.
The Bee's Purpose
Our purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.
At the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee, 291 spellers took the Preliminaries Test. That test contained 12 Round One spelling words, 12 Round One vocabulary questions, a Round Two vocabulary question and a Round Three vocabulary question for a total potential score of 30 points. Additionally, spellers who spelled correctly onstage during Rounds Two and Three of the Bee had an opportunity to earn an additional three points for each correct spelling. Here’s the catch: If a speller misspelled in either Round Two or Round Three, the speller was eliminated from the competition. A total of 40 spellers qualified for the Finals by earning at least 29 points in the Preliminaries.
