The New High School Promotion Policy
Effective 7/1/2017
Beginning in 2017-18, students must earn the following in order to be promoted:

Grade 9 to 10

At least 5 credits, including English I, ESOL English I, or Algebra I.

Grade 10 to 11
|
At least 10 credits in total, including 3 credits in English I, ESOL English I, Algebra I, English II, ESOL English II, and Geometry, and 1 credit in social studies and science.

Previously, students had to earn at least 9 credits in any subject.

|
At least 15 credits in total, including 5 credits in English I, English II, English III, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, and 3 credits in science and social studies (at least one in each).

Isabelle's in high school now! 9th grade. 2022 is coming faster than I've ever imagined.
According to this chart I pulled off Google, she needs a total of 5 credits a year. Prince George's County requires 21 credits to graduate. I like that idea. She'll be working on 5 credit courses a year. Once the courses are complete she will advance to the next grade.
Homeschooling allows us the freedom to work through these subjects at our own pace and fully understand the information before moving on.

Assessment Requirements | ||||
HSA and/or PARCC Assessments in:
| Students expecting to graduate this school year (June or August 2015) must continue to meet their HSA graduation requirements (pass all HSAs; receive a combined passing score, or complete Bridge Plan projects).
Students enrolled in Algebra 1 and English 10 in the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years will take the PARCC assessments corresponding to those courses, but they will not be required to pass the PARCC assessments in order to graduate.
Students enrolled in Algebra 1 and English 10 in the 2016-2017 school year and beyond will be required to pass the PARCC assessments in those courses, or complete Bridge Plan projects in order to graduate.
The Government and Biology HSAs remain in effect. Students graduating in 2015 and beyond must meet the Maryland High School Assessment requirements for those subjects or complete Bridge Plan projects.

Graduation Requirements
There are three requirements that students must meet in order to graduate with a
Maryland High School Diploma:
● credit;
● service learning;
● assessment.
The local school system may also impose local requirements. See COMAR
13A.03.02.09(B)(2).
A. Credit
To be awarded a diploma, a student must earn a minimum of 21 credits, 18 of them in the subjects
below. See COMAR 13A.03.02.03B. Students must also complete an Environmental Literacy
Program. See COMAR 13A.03.02.03C.
1. English - four credits of organized instruction in comprehension of literary and
informational text, writing, speaking and listening, language, and literacy, of which one
credit shall be aligned with the Maryland High School Assessment for English;
2. Fine Arts - one credit in visual arts, music, theatre, or dance, or a combination of these;
3. Mathematics - three credits, including one with instruction in algebra aligned with the
Maryland High School Assessment for algebra or one or more credits in subsequent
mathematics courses for which algebra is a prerequisite, and one with instruction in
geometry aligned with the content standards for geometry;
4. Physical Education - one-half credit;
5. Health Education - one-half credit;
6. Science - three credits of organized instruction which includes a laboratory component
engaging in the application of the science and engineering practices, the crosscutting
concepts, and disciplinary core ideas including Earth/space science, life science,
physical science (chemistry and physics), and engineering, technology, and applications
of science, and aligned to the Maryland High School Assessment for science.
7. Social Studies - three credits including one credit in United States history, one credit in
world history, and one credit in local, state, and national government aligned with the
Maryland High School Assessment for government;
8. Technology Education – one credit that includes the application of knowledge, tools,
and skills to solve practical problems and extend human capabilities; and
9. One of the following:
a. Two credits of world language, which may include American Sign Language;
b. Two credits of advanced technology education; or
c. Successfully complete a State-approved career and technology program.
