Mrs. Juliann Jane Tillman, Preacher of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, 1844: During the 19th century, many African-American women achieved positions of influence within the evangelical Christian community. Denied civil rights and social or economic opportunities elsewhere in society, women like Juliann Jane Tillman flourished among the Methodists, with their emphasis on universal salvation throgh personal repentance, conversion, and good works. Some reached a wider congregation through old lithograph prints such as those found for this lady in which she exhorts the viewer to prepare for the second coming of Christ in verses from the Book of Revelations: "Behold he comes in clouds of Glory, Ev'ry eye shall see him nigh; Prepare to tell the pleasing story; Of redemption through the sky."
