Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus (Onychomycosis)

Now that it's summer sandals season and lots of people are headed to the salon for a pedicure, you should know you run the risk of picking up a fungus.

Onychomycosis: what is it?

Onychomycosis (toenail fungus)is an infection of the nail due to microscopic fungi. It is either a dermatophyte or a Candida  It is mainly manifested on the nails of the feet but can also touch those of the hands. It often follows a fungal infection of the feet or hands. The sick nail has a yellowish spot on an edge that will then expand. Then it thickens, its matrix is then reached and fades.


Causes Of Nail Fungus

a brittle nail
 a discolored nail, usually yellow or with white spots, especially on the tip
 a thick or hardened nail that becomes difficult to cut or file possible pain/inflammation of the toes
 the presence of a slightly unpleasant smell
 a detachment of the nail (onycholysis)


Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus


1.Apple cider vinegar.

One of the best remedies for onychomycosis, is apple cider vinegar, Mix cider vinegar with Epsom salt in equal amounts and dilute with six cups of hot water. Let warm and soak the feet up to a day for at least 30 minutes to kill the fungus.

You can also mix apple cider vinegar with honey and apply directly to the nail.


2.Baking soda and borax.

Baking soda, a super alkaline, prevents nail fungus from spreading by creating an uninhabitable environment for them. Borax is a natural mineral that is also a powerful nail fungus killer.

These two combined create a cure that can heal nail fungus quickly. Mix equal amounts of borax powder and baking soda with water to form a paste. Then put the mixture and rub it on the infected toenails. Do this twice a day and two weeks after the fungus will disappear.

3.COCONUT OIL

One of the easiest ways to fight a fungus infection of the toenail is to rub coconut oil on the infected areas.

All you have to do is apply the coconut oil on the affected toenails about twice a day. Do not wash it and let the powerful antifungal properties of the oil work. In case you are also bothered by athlete's foot, treat by massaging with coconut oil on the parts of your feet where the characteristic signs of fungal infection are present, such as flaking, cracked skin, blisters, and dry patches.

4.Garlic

Garlic antifungal compounds help treat nail fungi. Mix a clove of garlic crushed with white vinegar and apply the mixture to the infected area, then cover it with a bandage for a few hours. Repeat each day until the infection is gone.

5.Lemon juice

 A magical ingredient for its countless benefits, It is effective antifungal thanks to its high content of citric acid which is an antifungal. To cure the infection, put hot water in a bowl, pour the juice of 2 lemons and make a foot bath for 20 minutes. Do that every day until the fungal disease is gone.

Some tips to prevent Toenail fungus

• To optimize the results of different treatments and foot baths, be sure to cut your nails short;
• Remember to properly disinfect the scissors you use to cut your nails;
• Do not share your towels with those around you;
• After washing, be sure to dry your feet, especially between the toes;
• Do not put polish on an infected nail;
• Choose wool or cotton socks over synthetic ones;
• Avoid wearing the same pair of shoes for several days in a row. Ideally, if the season allows, opt for open shoes;
• If you go to the pool, the steam room or go to gym locker rooms, wear sandals to protect your feet.
