I noticed when my husband is home and eating dinner with us he has the kids say a mealtime prayer. Usually it's one of two versions, the one I taught them from my high school days in child development or the "thank you father for this food we're about to eat, AMEN".
The mealtime prayer from high school child development days:
Take your little hands and go clap clap clap
and put them in your lap
thank you for the sun (make a circle with your hands)
thank you for the trees (make a T using you hands)
thank you for the mountains (make a triangle with your hands)
and thank you for me (hug yourself)
AMEN
JANUARY
May all be fed.
May all be healed.
May all be loved.
FEBRUARY
We thank thee for this food.
Feed our souls on the bread of life
and help us to do our part in kind words and loving deeds.
MARCH
Bless this food
and grant that all who eat it
may be strong in body
and grow in your love.
APRIL
We are grateful as we pause before this meal,
for all the blessings of life that you give to us.
Daily, we are fed with good things,
nourished by friendship and care,
feasted with forgiveness and understanding.
And so, mindful of your continuous care,
we pause to be grateful
for the blessings of this table.
MAY
God is great, God is good.
Let us thank him for our food.
By his hands, we are fed.
Let us thank him for our bread.
JUNE
Bless our happy family,
and bless this meal that we share.
Protect us all,
and help us to grow in your love.
JULY
For food that stays our hunger,
For rest that brings us ease,
For homes where memories linger,
We give our thanks for these.
AUGUST
Let us thank God for food when others are hungry; for drink when others are thirsty; for friends when others are lonely.
SEPTEMBER
Thank you for the world so sweet,
Thank you for the food we eat,
Thank you for your love so deep,
Thank you for my heart you keep,
Thank you for the birds that sing,
Thank you God for everything.
Amen.
OCTOBER
In this plate of food, I see the entire universe supporting my existence.
– Zen blessing from Thich Nhat Hanh
NOVEMBER
We give thanks for this food prepared by loving hands. we give thanks for life, the freedom to enjoy it all, and all other blessings.
DECEMBER
Ah, dearest Jesus, holy Child,
Make thee a bed, soft, undefiled,
Within my heart, that it may be
A quiet chamber kept for Thee.
My heart for very joy doth leap,
My lips no more can silence keep,
I too must sing, with joyful tongue,
That sweetest ancient song,
Glory to God in highest heaven,
Who unto man His Son hath given
While angels sing with pious mirth.
A glad new year to all the earth! Amen.
