2016 Olympcs in Rio August 5-21
According to historical records, the first ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. They were dedicated to the Olympian gods and were staged on the ancient plains of Olympia. They continued for nearly 12 centuries, until Emperor Theodosius decreed in 393 A.D. that all such "pagan cults" be banned.
OLYMPIA
Olympia, the site of the ancient Olympic Games, is in the western part of the Peloponnese which, according to Greek mythology, is the island of "Pelops", the founder of the Olympic Games. Imposing temples, votive buildings, elaborate shrines and ancient sporting facilities were combined in a site of unique natural and mystical beauty. Olympia functioned as a meeting place for worship and other religious and political practices as early as the 10th century B.C. The central part of Olympia was dominated by the majestic temple of Zeus, with the temple of Hera parallel to it.
There will be a classroom learning kit available online. Its not available as of July 7, 2016.
The OVEP Toolkit is a set of free resources designed to enrich any educational curriculum with Olympic-themed activities, teaching strategies and inspirational materials. It can be put into action by teachers and instructors, coaches and sports clubs, governments and educational authorities, members of the Olympic Family, and even parents at home.
For each individual, sport is a possible source for inner improvement - Pierre de Coubertin
The Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) is a series of free and accessible teaching resources that have been created by the IOC. Using the context of Olympic sports and the core principles of Olympism, participants are encouraged to experience values-based learning and to assume the responsibilities of good citizenship. It communicates the benefit of sport and physical activity through an understanding of Olympism and its impact on individual health, enjoyment, and social interaction.
SPORT IS A SCHOOL FOR LIFE
Blending of sport with education and cultural expression continues to be the foundation of the IOC’s Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP), version 2.0. Interlinked with the global education priorities related to promoting skill sets for the 21st century, OVEP uses the universality of sport in the Olympic context to support delivery of curriculum in and outside of the classroom. OVEP is based on the Olympic philosophy that learning takes place through a balanced development of body and mind. OVEP allows young people to experience life values such as excellence, friendship, and respect.

Together with the Ministry of Education Transforma offers a distance learning platform for P.E. teachers, pedagogical coordinators and young agents’ tutors. In this platform are courses that allow schools to approach the Rio 2016 Games in an interdisciplinary manner.
The platform presents contents that promote the Olympic and Paralympic values and suggests activities that support and enhance the school climate and results. The virtual environment gives access to thematic and interactive forums in which teachers can share their experiences. At the end of the course, the participants receive certificates of conclusion.
