Here is a project we did as a group. We had been suffering from colds and stomach bugs for a few weeks, so I decided to show the kids just what is going on inside their bodies.
Materials Needed:
Brown paper grocery bag
Two drinking straws
Two sandwich bags
One paper towel tube
Tape, scissors, and crayons
Heart printable
Stomach printable
Intestines printable
optional items: cotton balls, marble, or goldfish crackers
Directions:
Cut a vertical line along the back of the large paper grocery bag. Like making a vest. At the bottom of the bag, cut a neck hole. On the bottom sides of the bag cut arm holes.
While you are doing the above have the children color the organs. Cut the organs out and tape to the bag in the correct spot.
Tape the paper towel tube to the bag where the esophagus would be.
Have the children tape the plastic sandwich bag around the straw so that when the air enters the bag expands.
Tape the "lungs" to the paper bag on both sides of the paper towel tube.
Have the child put on the body vest and ask them to blow into the straws so they can see how lungs expand and contract when we breathe.
If you have cotton balls or goldfish crackers have the children drop them through the paper towel tube to mimic eating.
*If you want to make a more elaborate body vest you can tape a bag to the bottom of the paper towel roll and use toilet paper rolls to mimic intestines. Just cut them vertical and re-roll thinner and tape. It would take a few to make a path for the food (or you can use marble) to travel through the intestines.
